The Living Character: The Digital Reflection of Your Life

By Jason Chu

When you are playing an online video game, it does not really matter who is the person behind the opponent’s screens. What does matter, however, is how well the other person controls his or her individual compared to you. This narrows down the comparison just to both sides ability to interact with the game. As a player of PUBG Mobile, I have been practicing my ability to interact with my avatar in the game for a long time. I have to say, it was always terrifying to find yourself getting shot but you have no idea where it came from in the final circle.

Throughout the reviews and feedback from gamers’ society, one of the most important elements of a first-person role-playing game is the storyline. A good and creative storyline gave players a good experience with the characters they represented and the environment in the game.

For example, the famous Call of Duty series always portrays a heroic and generous character who is willing to sacrifice for his or her friends and family. Although the game focuses on eliminating hostile fighting forces, the players can sense the main character’s desperation and the willingness to fight throughout the progress of the game.

Despite the lower ratings of the new Call of Duty WWII, the series was a great work in terms of the focus on the build-up of the stories, characters in the game, and player’s experience of the main character’s emotions like desperation, anger, loneliness, and sadness, as well as the love for friends and families. The series was set in the time of conflict to better demonstrate these positive and unique characteristics.

If you had been following the PUBG Global 2018 Invitational, you would find out the way they play is completely different from the way a common user plays at home. The amount of time they spend practicing enables them to control their characters as if they are in the game. The prize motivation encourages these players to give out their best performance in the arena. During the break time, just like normal athletes, they need water and relaxation in order to concentrate when the next round starts.

Contrarily, unlike PUBG’s main focus on modern-day conflict, Battlefield series build up around historical events of world wars. For war enthusiasts, Battlefield I was an awesome opportunity to experience the environment of terror and patriotism during the “war to end all wars.” The continuous change of perspective from each soldier’s point of view, at the beginning of its campaign, gave us a concept of the scale of World War I. In multiplayer mode of the franchise, the different ways players interact with each other and vehicles is the key for a victory as a team. The introduction of war machines from world wars, like tanks, battleships, and aircraft, allows each player to exercise teamwork with the theory of dynamic warfare. Like the concept of the arcade style of games like PUBG, in this multiplayer version you have to fight hostile forces as well. However, the wide choices of stationary fortresses, armoured vehicle units, and armoured flying units allow players to be the soldiers who experience the chaos during the dark, conflicting ages of humanity.

Although the stories are about the course of the war, there are also touching scenes that reflect the struggles and difficulties of the non-combat personnel and wounded soldiers. This element contributes to the level of realism of the game franchise. In some situations, the player-controlled characters must experience the loss of his or her friends and families in order to gain progress in the game. The emotional and physical action caught the players attention as they are the one who witnessed what happened.

It is crucial for game producers to recognize the importance of the main characters in single-player games. Without in-game player to player interaction, individuals only occur based on the internal environment of the game. Therefore, the main characters play an even more important role in the game. Most single-player games focus on the storyline. However, player-controlled characters have to face the best of computer-programmed quests or bosses. These kinds of games, which build the stories around the central character, create a more interesting environment for characters controlled by players to explore. Although it might be boring after you have completed every single quest in the single-player campaign, it still requires some level of control over your representatives in the game to face the challenge.

As a tool of recreation for most people, video games give us a chance to experience different situations, whether it is fantasy, romance, or terror. The game will give players a much memorable experience when they are the center of the story. However, the meaning of gaming is different among professionals—they have built a connection between the real-life people and the virtual character in the game. The importance of narratives in the gaming industry is crucial for the players and for the game production companies. The approaches we interact with our characters in gaming today are dominated by handheld controllers, but as the virtual-reality steps into the gaming industry in the future, we are going to have a brand-new approach in the future.
